I love to go a wandering.......

Hello. The first sunny day we've had for a week or more, best get out there for a walk. I made a small pack up, only going to be out for about four hours, so just need something to keep me going. So, step out of my front door and go. I've posted this view before, the track goes along the bottom of a wood, with the river in the distance across the fields.
Approaching the Industrial Estate I found a colourful plastic coated picture dumped in the hedgerow. Shame no one will see it there, let's put it on the fence. Very artistic I thought.

Oh dear, the car park of the vacant office block has been invaded by the travelling community. I thought they lived in caravans because they like travelling around. Making a mess as usual.

I followed the River Trent, there is a boat unloading at Flixborough wharf. Can't get close enough to read it's name, but if I go on the Marine Traffic web site it tells me that is is still moored now, it's name is Scanlark, it's flying the St Vincent Grenadines flag, and  it's gross tonnage is 1371. Have a look here for more details.

Further along the Trent I came across two more boats at Gunness Wharf.

H & S Fairness is a general cargo boat, flying the Netherlands flag. It was built in 2012, it's home port is Delfzijl, and it's overall length is 87.75 m. It arrived here at 32.35 last night.

Wilson Almeria is flying the Maltese flag, it's home port is Valletta. It was built in 2010. It arrived at 23.45 last night.

I bet you really wanted to know that information didn't you, ha ha. The Marine Traffic site is really interesting.

If you want to see where my yacht ILONA is, have a look here.  It is actually moored in London at the moment, at Marsh Wall, the Isle of Dogs. Perhaps I should go down there and see it again. I last saw it in 2012 when it was there for the Olympics.

Ooops, forgot, getting carried away, I'm supposed to be writing about my walk today. From Gunness, I took a track which is an old railway line, now for walking and cycling. It goes over the M181 close to the roundabout at the end of it. In the distance you can see the big Tesco store where I do my yellow sticker shopping.

Homeward bound now. I walked through the outskirts of Scunthorpe, taking the most direct route back. Leaving the houses behind I picked up a tarmac footpath, which led onto a rough track and through some fields. The sun is just disappearing over the horizon.
Coming into Flixborough village with three miles left to do, it was starting to get dark. As luck would have it, someone I know spotted me and stopped to ask if I want a lift. I gratefully said, yes please, he was going my way, so I hopped in. It was 5pm when I landed home. Checked the mileage on Bikehike, and it was 11 miles, so I'll add that to my total on the calendar, making it 62 up to date. Nice to get back into the swing of longer walks again. Must do more.

Pleased to report that Bugsy is doing well. The tablets he is on are making his poo really sloppy like oxtail soup. Other than that he is eating ok, and moaning when I haven't given him the right food. There was the option of taking him for another injection today, but I phoned the vet and said he is doing ok and doesn't need it.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon. Have a nice weekend.

Eight years old today.

Well hello, how are you, welcome, come on in. We have a little celebration going on, the 2nd of January is the anniversary of the very first blog post, eight years ago, so Happy Birthday blog.
After an operation when I was 59 I had 12 weeks off to recover, and when I was ready to go back to work, they announced they were closing the depot. I didn't have a job to go back to. And so I became unemployed. I didn't have much money because I had been reducing my hours at work, which reduced my pay. I had also been living on a pittance, my JSA had been reduced because I was receiving a little bit of insurance money. Those were hard times, but some of it was of my making because I scaled back the driving. It was just unfortunate that I had to take sick leave for a while.
So this blog was started in the January, and I survived on little money until my 60th birthday in May. It was a big sigh of relief when my pension kicked in. Things are much improved now, my thriftyness and penny pinching has helped me to pay off my mortgage, change my car twice, and have holidays and days out. Now I am ticking over nicely living within my means, and happy with my lot.
I think I have had all the mileage updates for the 2016 walking challenge. Counting up, 21 people have passed the 1000 mile mark. I think that's bloomin great, you should all be proud of yourselves. Some of you have come very close to it, also a great achievement, and a lot of you have done so well by sticking with it. As I always say, having a go and doing what you can, is better than sitting on your bum and doing nothing. So well done everyone.
The challenge was not a competition, not a race, but I've picked out two names at random for a prize. So step forward Helen D and Vicki. Big cheer. Send me your addresses and I'll send you a little surprise in the post.
Up to now there are 50 names on the list for 2017. Wouldn't it be good if we could get half of them to the 1000 mile mark. It would be chuffin great. 25 people fitter than when they started at the beginning. I know December is a long way off, but as you can see, it is achievable Good luck everyone.
Right, what's next. My lunch yesterday. Not much food left in the fridge. A spud in the microwave, grated cheese, a tomato, and sliced beetroot. A nice simple cheap meal.
The other day I made this, enough for two days of lunch and dinner. Two smallish onions chopped, handful of Quorn pieces, carrots, Brussels Sprouts, frozen broad beans, sweetcorn, and frozen cranberries. Start it off with a slug of oil, add water and splash of fruit juice. Curry powder, turmeric, vegetable granules, coriander, Danish blue cheese, and cream cheese. Simmer till veg is soft, add water if needed.

I cooked plenty of wholemeal pasta, enough for three meals, and the fourth portion was a topping on a microwaved spud. I didn't bother freezing it, kept it in the fridge, and microwaved it before eating. My goodness it was ever so tasty. I will need to go shopping at some point this week, seems like ages since I last went to the shops. Not much left in the fridge.

Find the cat. Heidi has a new hidey hole, ha ha. Isn't it funny, just when you think they have found the ideal place, they move on to somewhere else.

That's it, all blogged out, nowt else left to say. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Is the Walking Group ready to go?

Hello. Are you ready for the big one? The WALK 1000 MILES CHALLENGE.. It's the 1st of January and this is where we all start. Choose your boots or your trainers depending on the terrain. I use trainers for walking on tarmac around my village, and boots when on tracks and rough footpaths. Make sure you have the right footwear. Note - my home made shoe rack made out of pallets.

So, let's go through the rules. You can walk wherever you like, whenever you like, the aim is to complete the 1000 miles by December 31st 2017. You can break it down to 2.73 miles a day, I have two measured routes of two and three miles, from my front door. This takes me 35 minutes for two miles, and 50 minutes for three miles. I like to do a fairly brisk walk, a saunter or stroll will not do, I aim to work up a bit of a sweat. Sometimes it's cold when I set out but after ten minutes the heart starts pumping a bit harder and I warm up. When I get back I am ready to peel off some clothes.

The monthly total to aim for is 84 miles. If you are somewhere near that figure that will be fine. Some months you will do more, and some less. If over several months you find you are dropping back, you will have to put more effort in to catch up.

You can ignore the daily and monthly totals, and take on some long walks if you like. When on a walking holiday you could walk ten miles a day for eight days and have the rest of the month off.

Of course all this walking will depend on how fit you are, how much you have done in the past, and how much time you can give to it. If you are working full time can you incorporate walking too and from your workplace into your schedule. If not, can you walk during your lunch break.

There will be some people who will not be physically able to 1000 miles. That's ok, it isn't a competition or a race. Set yourself a lower target, even if it is one mile a day. The aim of this is to at least get you doing some exercise. Anyone who has sever mobility problems should consult their doctor first for advice. They may be able to embark on a different exercise routine, eg, swimming, aerobics, or yoga.

You  will be checking your own mileage, it's up to you how you do this. Some people use a pedometer, or a fitbit. I use a web site, Bikehike.co.uk  Toggle map sizes so the larger OS map is on the right hand side and use your mouse to plot out your route either before or after you have walked.

You can count any miles that you walk in the course of a normal day. I don't know how steps convert to distance, you will have to work that out for yourself. I prefer to count only the miles I set out to walk for the challenge. I don't count in shopping or dog walking, unless it's a big dog that's going to pull me along pretty fast.

On the first of every month you can check in with your miles walked over the previous month. Put this in a comment, then it is all on one blog post. It doesn't matter if you don't get it in on time, it can be updated any day in the month, just go back to the post on the 1st and put it in. This is the only record, there won't be a separate page. So, to start you can comment on this post to say you are in, and for the first day of every month after is where you check in. I want to see those numbers rising.

You will be full of enthusiasm when you start, that's how New Year Resolutions work. A few weeks or months into it you will wonder what you let yourself in for. You will then look for excuses not to do it, and start missing days. Haven't got time, got to go shopping, got to pick the kids up, need to get your hair done, etc etc. If you are opting to walk daily, it is better to build that time into your daily routine and find a slot for it. I am thinking now I had better get off my bum and do it now. If you are struggling, tell the rest of the group. Don't just stop and say stuff it, I can't be bothered. You will feel the benefits if you stick at it. Sore feet, try different footwear. Aching leg muscles, hot bath and massage.

Here's a little bit of inspiration to get you started.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

PS. I think there are still some mileage totals for December to come in. When I have them I will have a complete list for 2016.

1000 miles - finished.

Hello, This is me on my last three mile walk which takes me to the magical number of 1000 miles. Yes, I've done it, and boy does it feel good.
I was a year younger when I started, and felt pretty much ok then, and now I feel even better. It's right what they say, exercise is good for the body and the brain. 67 is just a number, I don't feel any different to when I was forty something. I want to continue feeling good so I will be carrying this on and starting again on Jan 1st 2017. I can feel the benefits, and I want to stay mobile. It would be such a shame to stop now, I will keep going.
This was my lunch yesterday, potatoes, watercress, and mushrooms. All yellow stickers.
I cooked a pan of veggie stew yesterday, ate one portion for my dinner and froze three and a small portion. It was bloomin lovely, my secret ingredient is Danish Blue Cheese.

Tonight I have cooked another pan, eaten one, and there is some to freeze.

Bugsy update. A week ago I thought he was ready to keel over and die. He was scrawny and didn't have any interest in anything. He refused all the food I offered him. He had three injections from two vet visits, they didn't seem to make any difference. A day before I was due to take him back for blood tests he suddenly became interested in food. I had removed most of it as it became dry having been out for 24 hours, and replaced it with fresh out of the pouch. He was in it like a shot scoffing like he was starving, he almost was starving. Since then he has been eating small amounts regularly. When I come down in the morning he is sitting up asking for food. It seems his appetite has returned. Sometime he is picky and refuses what I am offering, but if I poke it around the bowl with a knife, tell him how lovely it is, and hold it under his nose he usually decides he will eat it. I'm completely baffled. So it seems we have a reprieve, how long for I don't know.

Thanks for popping in. Enjoy your Sunday. We'll catch up soon.

Almost there, keep walking to keep fit

Hello. With only a month to go to the end of the challenge, I've just been checking the state of play on our Walking Group page. I am really chuffed that so many of you have done so well. To be honest I thought more would have dropped out, but I'm pleased to say that a great many of you have stuck it out and are still soldiering on.

Everyone walks at their own pace so it's not fair to say some have done better than others. You can only do what you can do. I always say as long as you can do some walking, it's better than none.

I'm going to put a few names on this post of those who have really pulled out all the stops. Indeed, some of you have finished well before the time. The finishing line is midnight on December the 31st, so if you have already passed the 1000 miles, you can relax and do no more, or you can carry on for your grand total.

These are the figures which came in at the end of October, (except mine which is up to date), so they will be higher now if you are still walking.

Take a bow......

Please check the Walking page to see your mileage if your name is not here.

You may remember that I started on December the 1st last year as a trial. So with that 75 miles, I have gone over the 1000, but I will carry on to the end of the year, just to keep you company, and to cheer you on. Come on ladies, you can do it.

People have asked, what next. I haven't decided what I am going to do yet, I might think of another challenge or I might carry on with this. Whatever I do it will include some form of exercise, as I feel it is important to look after my body for life, not just for one year. I won't be making another walking group page for 2017, but I hope that some of you will continue the good work you have already started and record your own mileage.

If you feel you would like support, you could register with the Country Walking magazine challenge where you will be able to keep track of your own mileage and chat with like minded people. This is the link to their site.  Another option is to join the Walking Forum, of which I am a member, and put your name down on their list. Then it's up to you to update your own mileage by going to the thread, quoting the list, then adding your new miles, and posting it back on. I have been updating mine here. The thread is in Long Distance Walks.

It's been a long walk, but we are not far off now, everyone should be proud of what they have achieved.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Update on the Walking Group

Hello. As we are on the last straight towards the end of the Walk 1000 miles in one year challenge, I thought I would give you a condensed update taken from the original list. Click on the link above for the monthly scores. Thank you for updating and sharing your progress. From the original 64 who signed up, 43 are still on the list. I have deleted those who never really got off the ground. I don't like to give up on people too soon, but as I hadn't heard anything from them it added extra time for me to scroll through when updating. I suspect a few more have given up as I haven't heard anything from them since February. Or maybe they are still doing the challenge but just haven't told me.

Anyway, in no particular order, this is the state of play today. We have some who have already passed the 1000 mark, a fantastic effort, well done, you should be proud of yourselves. You can carry on to the end of the year if you like, to give you a grand total for the twelve months, or stop now, it's up to you.

Some of you are so close, you will definitely finish it, possibly during November, but definitely by the end of the year. Don't worry if you are a bit behind, all kinds of things crop up which can knock you back a bit. The fact that you made a start and did your best is all credit to you.

Any challenge you take on will have it's ups and downs, the fact that this started on January the 1st made it more like a New Years Resolution. A burst of enthusiasm and you're all fired up to give it a go. It's just the same as giving up smoking, or trying to lose weight, or spend less, or save for an expensive item like a holiday or wedding.

Everybody has the idea of creating a new start in January, when in fact you can make a start at any time during the year. Telling yourself that you will do such and such, or give up or cut down is the easy part, it's keeping up the momentum that is hard. I have paced myself with this walking challenge, I'm a steady plodder and prefer to chip away at things rather than go hell for leather then experience burn out. Far better to lose a couple of pounds a month over a period of a year, rather than starve yourself for two months, then binge and put all the weight all back on again.

The key to any challenge is how long can you sustain it for. Looking at the long term to achieve the result you want can be daunting, it means you can often lose sight of your goal. Keeping that in your mind and focusing on the new you is imperative. Take your eye off the game and you can slip back down the slope. If this happens, pick yourself up and vow to do better.

A couple of people have asked, what next? It's looking like a new challenge is needed when this one has finished. I am hoping that some of you will be carrying on with your walking for health. I will always find an excuse to get out and walk. I will keep track of my miles by writing it on my calendar, maybe you could do the same.

I have things to do. Thanks for popping in. We'll catch up soon.

Grange over Sands day 3

Hello. It was a lovely sunny morning on the last day of my hols. I did think about setting off back home after checking out of the hotel, but then thought, shame to waste a day, I'll go and have a little bimble. I walked along the coastal path towards town.
The duck pond in the park was full of birds chattering away as they scavenged for food. The little girl was quite overwhelmed by them all as they came close to her.

I strolled around the gardens and saw this wonderful tree, isn't it gorgeous. It's a Metasequoia glyptostorboides, or a Dawn Redwood if you want an easy name, quite a rare tree in the UK apparently. Read about it here.  I stopped to chat with the man seen in the picture, who was sketching the trunk. He is an artist and lives in a cottage just across the road from it.

I set off up Windermere Road road looking for a footpath to take me into Eggerslack Wood, and caught up with three people and their dog going in the same direction. I went ahead of them for a few minutes then came to a junction where several paths met and wasn't sure which one to take. Luckily the walkers caught me up and pointed me in the right direction. From then on I went ahead and stopped for a minute, and they caught me up again. It was handy having someone with local knowledge to chat to, we ended up getting to the top together.

Almost there, keep going.

Just over the top of that last rock on the horizon.

And this is what you find when you arrive at the top of Hampsfell. The Hospice was built in 1846 as a shelter for travelers. There are some pictures of it on this site. And some more here.
On the top of the tower in the middle is a dial, the arrow can be pointed in any direction and the corresponding numbers can be seen on this list to indicate whereabouts all the places are.

Some of the views from the top. A little bit hazy in the distance.

Time to set off back down, my new walking buddies are going for lunch, and I have to get back to the car still in the hotel car park. That's Archie the dog by the way, he is lovely. We parted company ten minutes later and I followed a track past High farm, Spring Bank, and Grange Fell, down to the road.

My holiday was over and all I had to do was drive back. I was a bit sad to leave, it's a really nice area, with nice people, everyone was so friendly. I sent a text to Janet when I stopped for a break at Harrogate, giving her the eta of 7.30pm. And I was dead right, 7.30pm it was. The kitties were pleased to see me.

I took three of my pictures to the Arts Centre today. Judging takes place tomorrow to choose the ones for the Open Exhibition. Keep your fingers crossed, I hope they pick mine.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Grange over Sands day 2

Grange over Sands day 2
Hello my little bloggerettes. Glad you like the pictures yesterday of day 1, here are some more. I decided to follow the Cumbrian Coastal Way path in the other direction and head south. The path is well marked on the map, so turn left out of the hotel along the road, onto a minor road and left down a track. So far so good, until I came to a shed with a sign on it with an arrow to follow the path to the right into a field. I had a look and found several cows in the corner of the field just the other side of the stile, knee deep almost in mud. I didn't fancy that much, the cows were not the problem but I didn't want to sink into ankle deep stinky slurry. I backtracked a bit and found an alternative route that joined up with the Coastal Way further along. It went over a railway line and along two straight stretches of road skirting round an old airfield.
I eventually arrived at the entrance to the Lakeland Leisure Park, at this point the path takes a sharp right turn and goes across an embankment next to the marshes.
I marched on into a headwind, with the marshes on my left and the sand and water a long way into the distance. Boy was it windy, I began to think I was a bit crazy. After the straight bit it goes around some bends. After Cowpren Point there are some farm buildings on the right with a wide gate giving access to the shore. I don't know if the farmer is allowed to dump piles of rubble and wood here, it was a bit unsightly. Pity I wasn't in my car, there were some nice pieces of timber and slate to scavenge. Not a place I could drive to without trespassing on private land.

Hey, look what I found. Anyone from Llandudno want a piece of the pier sign? Well here it is, I left it there. It's amazing how far rubbish can travel in the sea. As the crow flies it's 65 miles from Lanndudno to here.

These trailers look like they have some kind of fishing equipment on them, nets, floats, and rope. Maybe it's what the cockle pickers use. No doubt someone will be able to tell me.

The wind was getting a bit too much at this point, and I was fed up of scrambling over large stones, so I turned inland at Sand Gate and arrived at Flookburgh. Lovely name that.
After a sit down on the bench in the centre of the car park, I followed the road to Cark. A bit further up the road I entered the gates of Holker Hall. Nope, I am not paying to go into the gardens and hall, I will see if I can get some free pics.

Free to go into the cafe and shop. Nobody sitting in the courtyard.

Don't need any food, just had a bite to eat from my rucksack, and had a big breakfast, that's enough to keep me going.

There were a few paying visitors about. Need a ticket to go through the gate on the left of the box.

I skirted around the outside of the fence, looking for some nice views.

Found another gate, no one about so I nipped in rather sharpishly.

Thought I had better not stay too long, get some snaps and skidaddle.

Off I went, picked up the Cistercian Way which joined up with the Cumbrian Coastal Path, through some woods, and along the road to Cartmel. Once again I passed the Racecourse.

And took this snap of a very nice shop. I couldn't get it before because of the big four wheel drive vehicles parked in front of it. One thing I have noticed in this neck of the woods is the large numbers of 65 and 66 plate, and personal number plate, expensive cars around here. Hardly any old bangers. Must be quite a wealthy area.

From Cartmel I took the road past Hesketh Wood, High Fell Gate, and Middle Fell Gate, towards Kent Bank. As soon as I got onto Allithwaite Road I saw this magnificent building. Isn't it just amazing. It is Cartmel Grange, a private residential nursing home built in 1914, as a convalescent home for miners. Read all about it here.   I would love to look around inside, and as it is a listed building I think a lot of the original features are still there.

From there it was a 20 minute walk back to the hotel. Once again, a lovely meal was served. The food was perfectly cooked, could not fault it at all. After dinner I sat in the lounge busy on the computer, and entertainment was organised for anyone who wanted to join in.

14 miles walked today, the boots are great, only one tiny blister which I ignored. Come back tomorrow for day 3. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.
Toodle pip.
